Me and a buddy of mine both bought one of these when they first came out. We both bought the same mobos, CPU's, towers, etc. We thought it would be neat to have the same stuff.
Well, he had no problems with his system. However, my system constantly gave me errors with the display driver. My screen would freeze, go black, and then come back with the message "Display driver has stopped responding but has recovered". I bought an SSD hard drive. I thought maybe my problem would go away with the installation of the SSD and new OS install. Nope. On top of that, games would start locking up. I bought a new PSU thinking that might be the problem (XFX's 850 watt modular PSU). Nope. Ran Memtest. Updated bios on the card so i would have manual fan control thinking heat might be an issue even though the temps were in the norms. That fixed nothing. My friend and i even swapped cards. Turned out it did the same thing in his system. His ran fine in mine. So I request an RMA. I overnight the thing to XFX because I also use my computer for work. They get it and tell me they are putting it in their RMA process. 2 days later, they tell me they have extensively tested the card and can't find any fault with it and would like to ship it back to me. In the mean time, mind you, I am running my machine just find with a GTX 260 I slapped in it from my son's computer. So as of now, I basically told them this is unacceptable and demanded a replacement card. Dunno how that will go. Already ordered a EVGA Nvidia GTX 580 though in case this doesn't go well. So, this card is fast. But if you have problems... woe to you. And IF they do send you a replacement, it will be a refurb. I plan on ebaying this thing and i will never buy another XFX product again.
Update: XFX did in fact replace the card. But, it doesn't much matter. i bought a 580 GTX and my system has had zero issues. The 580 works out better for me anyway because I have a 3d tv. I'm going to slap the ATI in my son's machine and see how it goes. I'm still done with XFX.I just hope all the horror stories I have read about "replacement cards" don't come true for me.
The card is great when it works though! Just PRAY to the electronic gods you don't have to ever RMA it!

For a single card it doesn't get any better than XFX's Black Edition. The card screams, is not excessively loud when cranked up, and actually remains fairly cool paired with my NZXT Phantom case 7 fan setup. A nice plus comes when you register you card with XFX as you get exclusive treatment and free OC tools accesible only to Black Edition registrants.
This beast will run any game on high settings and still maintain reasonable frame rates. The Eyefinity with a 3 screen set up is so sweet. It takes some games to a whole new level. I alway knew hanging on to those old 19" screens might just come in handy one day.
The price is high, but the payoff is most definitley worth it. Do yourself a favor, save your pennies, scratch together the dollars and buy yourself a real treat!

Death in the Line of Duty

To start, even though this card is dead and Amazon won't accept a return, I in no way
blame Amazon for this fiasco, as the card was manufactured by XFX, not Amazon. I do however
have some choice words for XFX as the only replies I have received from them look like they were
written by a fifteen year old with no tech knowledge.
The Card

running the 5970 in an Antec 900
with an overclocked i7 920 (3.2 GHz)
and a ocz 700w power supply.
When this card performed, it did so admirably, pumping out massive performance that dominated
every game I threw at it including the currently (in my mind) best looking game Metro 2033, and
yes, before you ask, it can play Crysis!
+Crysis- 1920 X 1080 with everything maxed = 55 fps average.
+Metro 2033- 1920 X 1080 with everything maxed = 39-42 fps average.
+World in Conflict 1920 X 1080 with everything maxed = 80-110 fps average.
-Average Temps before death at 38 % fan speed: 38c at idle.
-Average Temps before death at 50 % fan speed (loud but I use headphones) 60c at high load.
So as you can see this card is blazing fast, and requires less power and produces less heat
than two physically cross-fired 5870s. So if you are looking for insane performance with surprisingly
forgiving power requirements,(eat your heart out GTX 480!) then look no further than the 5970.
Conclusion

I didn't think it was fair to rate this card low so I give the card itself a 4/5
but I think XFX should be ashamed of their support, so XFX gets a 2/5.
So buyer now you are at a crossroads. You know you want the blazing, steamy performance this card can
bring, but should you get it from XFX? Well that's up to you. Maybe my situation is a-typical of XFX's
customer service, but I feel that in recent years XFX has dropped the ball in the service department.
Well I'm off to once again try and initiate the RMA process, but so far I'm being given the run around.
Overall this is a great card as long as it doesn't run into any problems, because XFX won't be there for
you.
